Our studio is called Calm Stone Room. I should say at the outset that hot stone massage is not the only thing we do, and it is not even the most common thing we do. Most of the table hours we book are Swedish or deep-tissue. But the studio is named for the stones because, when it is done properly, hot stone work is one of the most useful modalities I know — and when it is done badly, it is one of the worst.

The bad version is what most spas offer. The stones are warm. They are placed on the body. They sit there for a minute. They are moved somewhere else. This is heat therapy with extra steps. It does not require a trained practitioner and it does very little.

What real hot stone work is

The stones are basalt — chosen because basalt holds heat — and they are warmed in water to a temperature just below the threshold of discomfort. The practitioner uses the stones as extensions of their hands. They glide them across the back in long strokes. They tuck them under the shoulder blades and let the warmth reach into a region the fingers cannot easily access. They use a small stone to do trigger-point work in the neck, the heat allowing the muscle to release in a way it would not under a cooler thumb.

Done this way, the stones are tools. They let the practitioner reach pressure depths and durations that would otherwise require either more force or more time. A single hot stone session, properly given, can do what three regular sessions would do.

Why our studio is named for them

We chose the name because the stones are, for us, a small daily reminder of what the studio is for. They have to be heated carefully. They have to be checked for temperature before they touch a body. They have to be cleaned and dried between sessions. They have a small ceremony around them that the rest of the work does not require.

That ceremony — the slow heating, the careful checking, the patience — is what we are trying to extend to every modality we offer. Whether a client is coming in for stones or for a Swedish, the room they walk into is a room where things are done slowly and with attention. The stones are just the most visible example of how we work.

A heated stone in a calm hand is one of the oldest pieces of medicine we have.

If you have only ever had hot stone massage at a spa as part of a package, you have probably not had hot stone massage. Find a practitioner who does it as their primary modality. The difference is large.
